چکیده

Previous investigations of noise in mutually synchronized coupled-oscillator systems are extended to include the effects of phase noise introduced by externally injected signals. The analysis is developed for arbitrarily coupled arrays and an arbitrary collection of coherent injected signals, and is illustrated with the specific case of linear chains of nearest neighbor coupled oscillators either globally locked (locking signal applied to each array element) or with the locking signal applied to a single-array element. It is shown that the general behavior is qualitatively similar to a single injection-locked oscillator, with the output noise tracking the injected noise near the carrier, and returning to the free-running array noise far from the carrier, with intermediate behavior significantly influenced by the number of array elements and injection strength. The theory is validated using a five-element GaAs MESFET oscillator array operating at X-band.

The Transient Behavior of LC and Ring Oscillators under External Frequency Injection

In this work, time domain analysis is used to solve Adler’s equation in order to obtain the required time, for an oscillator under external injection, reaching the steady-state condition. Mathematical approach has been applied to fully describe the transient of frequency acquisition in injection-locked LC and Ring oscillators considering their time-varying nature. Then, the analysis is verifie...

Continuum Modeling of the Dynamics of Externally Injection-Locked Coupled Oscillator Arrays - Microwave Theory and Techniques, IEEE Transactions on

Mutually injection-locked arrays of electronic oscillators provide a novel means of controlling the aperture phase of a phased-array antenna, thus achieving the advantages of spatial power combining while retaining the ability to steer the radiated beam. In a number of design concepts, one or more of the oscillators are injection locked to a signal from an external master oscillator. The behavi...

Coupled-Oscillator Phased Array Systems for Millimeter Wave Applications*

An array of oscillators coupled through mutual injection locking on a nearest neighbor basis has the property of automatically adjusting itself to linear phase progression across the array in response to appropriate adjustment of the elements at the edge of the array. This mechanism is well-suited to phase generation for phased array antennas at millimeter wavelengths because it obviates the to...

A Low-Power 24-GHz Frequency Synthesizer for Automotive Radar Application

We proposed a 24-GHz frequency synthesizer (FS) for automotive radar application, which consists of a phaselocked loop (PLL) and an injection-locked frequency multiplier (ILFM). Based on a novel topology, the multiply-by2 ILFM consists of a double-balanced mixer and an injectionlocked oscillator (ILO). The PLL is designed with a 12-GHz voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) and an injection-locked...
